No appointment needed for new walk-in services, and those unable to pay won’t be turned away.
Getting mental health support in Corpus Christi just got a little easier. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Counseling and Training Clinic now offers walk-in services, allowing residents to seek help without an appointment.
The clinic offers counseling for children ages 6 and older, adults, couples, and families. Services are donation-based, with a suggested $5 per session and a maximum of $20 per month.
Those who cannot afford to pay will not be turned away.
“We are the counseling and training clinic, also known as the Community Outreach Collaborative, where we offer free and low-cost counseling services,” said Dr. Renita Newton-Garcia, who works in counselor education at TAMU-CC.
Walk-in services are available Mondays from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m.
Newton-Garcia said the walk-in option is especially helpful for people who may be unsure about starting counseling but want to learn more.
The clinic helps people dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, grief, past trauma and major life changes.
“Just having a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate and empathetic space to come to where you’re gonna be seen, heard, validated and supported,” Newton-Garcia said.
The clinic has six counseling rooms and approximately 17 counselors-in-training who work under supervision.
Those interested in scheduling an appointment can call 361-825-3988. Newton-Garcia said the clinic typically schedules new patients within a week or the following week.
Counseling services are confidential, with certain legal exceptions involving safety concerns and suspected abuse.
For anyone struggling and unsure where to turn, Newton-Garcia offered a simple message.
“Hope is here. Hope is ready, available, and waiting to meet you when you cross the threshold of the door.”
