SAN ANTONIO – Local Tejano artists are hosting a special event this weekend to support struggling families and encourage the community to join them.
The Tejanos Unidos Thanksgiving Food Drive Concert will take place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Jaime’s Place. Admission is a food donation.
“When I think of Jaime’s Place, I [automatically] think community,” Jenny B said.
Jenny B and Mousie Cervantes are among the local Tejano artists organizing the event.
“They can give any amount they want, but we’re really asking people to bring turkeys if they can and canned goods,” Cervantes said.
The Thanksgiving food drive concert is designed to help those who have fallen on hard times. Jenny B and Cervantes said it’s also an opportunity for Tejano artists to give back to a community that’s consistently supported them.
“We just want to feel as close to the people as we possibly can,” Jenny B said.
This is the event’s second year. Jenny B said organizers collected 4,700 meals last year and hope to collect 10,000 this year.
The meals will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank, which distributes the food directly to the community.
“People are suffering … we can’t just sit back,” Jenny B said.
