EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Pebble Hills took another step toward a district title with a dominant first half against Coronado, building a 28-3 lead by halftime after an early delay pushed back the kickoff.

The Spartans entered the matchup 3-0 in district play, while the Thunderbirds were 2-2 in district and in the middle of a playoff push. The game began after a little more than an hour delay.

In the first quarter, Pebble Hills struck first on a touchdown pass from Joe Fernandez to Gianni Ponce to take a 7-0 lead.

Coronado answered with a big play when Nolan Montion hit CJ Frescas deep over the middle. Frescas was brought down inside the 30, just outside the 20, setting up a Myles Guardado field goal that cut the deficit to 7-3.

Pebble Hills responded with another scoring drive as Fernandez connected with LJ Bailey downfield for a touchdown.

Coronado later came up empty on another field goal attempt after a botched snap.

On the next possession, Fernandez faked the handoff and found Ponce wide open for another touchdown as the Spartans continued to pull away, taking a 28-3 lead into halftime.
