The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has elected Heidi C. Knowles, MD, FACEP, as president-elect. Dr. Knowles will serve a one-year term as president beginning October 2027.
Dr. Knowles identified three priorities for her upcoming term: safety, support, and stability for emergency physicians on the job.
“ACEP will lead efforts to address violence in emergency departments, advance physician-led solutions to systemic challenges like the boarding crisis, and drive initiatives to improve work conditions so that emergency physicians can focus on saving lives,” she said.
Dr. Knowles is a practicing emergency physician with Integrative Emergency Services, vice chair and medical director of emergency medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. She serves as an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Texas Christian University School of Medicine.
Dr. Knowles practices as a staff emergency physician at Texas Health Southlake and is the EMS medical director for Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. She is a past president of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Knowles earned a medical degree from the University of Texas at Houston Medical School and completed her emergency medicine residency at Memorial Hermann Hospital through the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
