EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of the new industrial park near the El Paso International Airport on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

The park, called Sky Park, is located near Walter Jones and George Perry Boulevard and will be built on land owned by the airport. According to the news release by the City of El Paso, the project is a “major step forward in its continued growth as a hub for logistics, manufacturing and innovation.”

Sky Park is to be constructed in four phases and will be developed by Dallas-based firm Green Point Development.

According to Tony Nevarez, the director of aviation at the El Paso International Airport, this will be Green Point’s first facility in the state of Texas.

The project will bring over 3 million square feet of industrial space and add more than 2,000 direct jobs to the local economy, the City said.

“First of all, it’s already creating jobs here by the construction team that’s out here building. The next thing is the industrial and the manufacturing part. You know, depending on who moves here, we’re definitely going to be moving products in and out of El Paso, either completed or being completed here.

“We have a foreign trade zone that’s really important to the community and the growth of billions of dollars that comes to the El Paso community. So, we’re hoping that we can build some buildings, some industrial park facilities that will bring a lot of people, a lot of manufacturing jobs, a lot of shipping jobs, resistance jobs to El Paso,” Navarez said.

Many community leaders were in attendance for the ceremony, including El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson, who says this is a huge win for the city.

“There’s going to be a lot of jobs, a lot of construction jobs, but when it’s all said and done with, there’ll be about $8.4 billion worth of goods and services that come through this facility. It’s going to be advanced manufacturing, logistics. It’s going to be a real huge win for El Paso,” Johnson said.

Additionally, the first industrial park built on airport land was in the 1970s, representing “a partnership of public and private sectors, and a smart, strategic use of city-owned land,” read the news release.
