HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Deputies are looking for a driver who crashed on the North Freeway and abandoned their passenger, who later died, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities said the unidentified driver was driving a black 2026 Hyundai Elantra northbound in the 19900 block of North Interstate Highway 45 at about 12:30 a.m., with Carlexia Shields in the front right passenger seat.

Deputies said a witness reported that the Hyundai Elantra drove off the road into a grass median on the east side of the roadway before striking a tree with the front right part of the car.

The driver did not stay at the scene to help Shields and fled the scene on foot, deputies said.

An ambulance took Shields to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, HCSO said.

The sheriff’s office said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division.
