LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock Police Department is leading local security preparations for the president’s visit Tuesday, in coordination with the U.S. Secret Service.
Police Chief Seth Herman said communication with the Secret Service has been extensive to prepare for the visit.
“Having been through this on numerous occasions in my previous job posting, it’s quite in-depth. And as you can imagine, there are a lot of moving parts to it,” he said.
While Herman has some experience hosting the president, he’s told his officers what they can expect.
“Our people are well aware of the extensiveness of this operation and how critical it is, not only to Lubbock, but also the remainder of the United States and the world at large,” he said.
Road closures and entry
The city is working to close Mac Davis Lane and 9th Street between Avenue O and Avenue K for Tuesday. Avenue O will also be closed.

There are already barricades outside the Civic Center leading people to the only entrance – from 8th Street to the west.
“Be mindful of our personnel. Mindful of any barricades or any officers standing post. Follow their direction. It is a law violation if you try to circumvent any kind of posting of an officer or a barricade. So, don’t go around them. Please follow their directions,” he said.
Parking and prohibited items
Herman recommended using rideshare services or having someone drop off visitors. Drivers dropping someone off can travel on 8th Street from Avenue Q.
Parking at the Civic Center starts at noon. Visitors cannot walk through the parking lot and will need to follow officers’ direction to the perimeter to reach the entrance.
There is a list of prohibited items available here, including signs.
Protest area
A space for protesters will be in the parking lot across the street from the Civic Center at the MCM Eleganté.
Herman said the department will have a mobile booking unit there, similar to what is used at a Texas Tech game.
“If you’re not following the rules, you can imagine that if you are inside the venue, you will be removed. If there is an arrestable offense, you will be detained and arrested. So, again, I would suggest that everybody follow the First Amendment, but please also follow the directions of our officers. Our purpose is to make sure that everyone is safe. To that end, we will take whatever measures necessary within the confines of the law,” Herman said.
He said the department is prepared, coordinated and committed to ensuring a safe environment for people at the rally and everyone in Lubbock.
Herman says information can change with a visit like this, so check this website for the most up-to-date information.
