EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS 4) — El Paso native Jake Fette came off the bench and helped Arizona State rally for a 28-17 win over Kansas State on Saturday.
ASU opened with quarterback Mikey Keene, who left late in the second quarter with a leg injury. Former starter Cutter Boley took over, but the offense struggled. Boley completed one pass for seven yards before the Sun Devils turned to Fette late in the third quarter, trailing 17-14.
The Del Valle graduate led two touchdown drives, which were both capped off by Cardae Mack rushing scores, to win the game 28-17.
“I just went out there and played one play at a time,” Fette said after the game. “Try to string a drive together, even if it ends in a field goal, we ended up scoring which was the icing on the cake. Mack had a real good day and made it easy for me. Just coming out here and being happy to get a win for my team is all I wanted to do.”
Fette finished 3 of 6 passing for 45 yards. The true freshman also picked up a first down with his legs.
ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham said they turned to Fette looking for a spark, and he delivered.
“Jake has that look in his eyes and has the swagger,” Dillingham said. “We just wanted the spark there with Jake. We all know how good of a player he is.”
On Monday, Dillingham described Keene as questionable for the Sun Devils trip to BYU. He confirmed that if Keene is unavailable, Fette will make his first career start.
“We have had a lot of confidence in him since we recruited him,” Dillingham said Monday. “Everybody in the country was trying to get him to come visit, but he said ‘No, no, no I want to be at Arizona State.’ My response is when he gets here is I am going to protect you and we will only put you in when you are ready because we believe that he can be the future here.”
ASU will face BYU on Saturday at 1:30 MST. The game will air on FOX.
