WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Texas voters will elect a Land Commissioner Nov. 3 — think Texas’ landlord-in-chief.
The job runs the state’s oldest agency, the Texas General Land Office, according to the General Land Office.
The office manages 13 million acres of state land and oil and mineral leases that generate billions for the state, according to the General Land Office and the Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news organization.
That revenue goes into the Permanent School Fund, created in 1876, which pays out to public schools.
But there’s more. The land commissioner chairs the Veterans Land Board, overseeing low-cost land and home loans for Texas veterans, plus veterans homes and cemeteries, including the cemetery in Killeen.
And the list goes on. The office handles disaster recovery, federal flood protection funds, protects the coast, manages the Alamo and archives state land records.
Seeking the job are incumbent Republican Dawn Buckingham, Democrat Benjamin Flores and Libertarian Neill Snider, according to Texas Secretary of State ballot information.
Early voting runs Oct. 19-30. For registration and polling information, visit VoteTexas.gov.
