EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the death of a 57-year-old male inmate who passed away while receiving medical care at a local hospital.

According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate, who had been in custody since November 16, 2025, was transported to a local hospital due to medical concerns on October 20, 2026, and remained hospitalized while receiving treatment.

However, on Monday, October 26, at approximately 4:23 a.m., the inmate was pronounced dead.

According to officials, while the circumstances appear to be medical in nature, the cause of death remains under investigation, and the official cause of death has not yet been determined.

As with any in-custody death, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) has been notified, the sheriff’s office said.

The Texas Rangers and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit will also conduct investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

This marks the fifth in-custody death reported by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in 2026, compared to nine in-custody deaths reported at this time last year.
