The potent one-two punch of guard Tramon Mark and post Matas Vokietaitis powered Texas basketball to a 93-58 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday at Moody Center.
And realistically, anything other than that type of victory against an outmanned squad from the Northeastern Conference would have been disconcerting for first-year coach Sean Miller, whose team is in the midst of a four-game stretch against low-major squads after a season-opening loss to Duke.

“Every time that we play a game, it’s a golden opportunity to accomplish so many things,” Miller said. “One thing that I’ve said to our guys: Every team I’ve coached or played in has around 17 home games a year. They go by so fast. Cherish every one of them. Be the most ready you can be in every circumstance. You have to respect the game. You can’t cut a corner. Always compete, whether it be in practice, whether it be the last eight minutes of this game or the first four minutes of the game. We have to be a team who roughly looks the same when it comes to our effort.”
Texas (2-1) showed plenty of effort against FDU (0-3) even though it fell behind early 10-2. Mark attacked the basket with abandon while making nine of his 13 shots, and Vokietaitis went 8-for-8 from the field while scoring his 19 points in just 19 minutes. Jordan Pope and Dailyn Swain each added 11 points as nine Texas players made at least one basket.
“Tramon Mark and Matas, they combined to be too much for FDU,” Miller said. “I thought both of those guys on our end were really terrific, and they ended up being the difference.”

Miller also cited room for improvement on the offensive end. The Longhorns converted just 19-of-34 from the foul line after shooting 75% through their first two games, and they missed several open 3-pointers. Improving from both lines, said Miller, will be emphasized starting with Saturday’s game against visiting Kansas City.
“If we could have been better in those two areas tonight, we would have pushed the 100 point mark,” he said. “And I think we all would have taken that. If I had one thing to harp on, it’s very difficult to shoot 34 free throws and make 19. We left a lot of points on the board. We have been able to get to the free-throw line even in our two closed scrimmages, and we’ve been able to convert until tonight. We’ve got to convert at a better rate than that.”

Chendall Weaver drives hard to the basket and drops in his first two points while drawing a foul. Nine Longhorns have now scored points for Texas.
A brilliant pass from Jordan Pope to Matas Vokietaitis on the fast break leads to a pair of foul shots. That’s the kind of transition action Sean Miller wants to see from the Longhorns. Vokietaitis (12 points) and Tramon Mark (11) have reached double figures for Texas.

Six points in 70 seconds, and FDU takes a timeout. Jordan Pope caps the quick Texas burst with a smooth jumper in the lane.
Cam Heide makes his impact felt for Texas during a 10-3 run to close the half. First, the forward dives on a loose ball and kicks it out to Jordan Pope for a 3-pointer. Then, he takes a pass from Tramon Mark and drains a 3 for his first points as a Longhorn. Texas is doing what it needs to do against FDU behind Dailyn Swain (8 points, 4 rebounds), Mark (9 points), Matas Vokietaitis (9 points) and Lassina Traore (3 points, 7 rebounds).

Tramon Mark has nine points for Texas after three quick buckets, and he matches Matas Vokietaitis for team-high honors. One thing to note: Texas is just 5-of-12 from the foul line after making 75% of their free throws over the first two games.
The Longhorns’ defense has clamped down on FDU, which is shooting 6-of-25 from the floor. Matas Vokietaitis is continuing his hot start to the season with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting and two rebounds.

Sean Miller is already going deep into his bench, and why not against FDU? Nine Longhorns have already seen action, and they’re all active on defense; FDU is shooting just 4-of-16 from the floor.
FDU races out to a 10-2 lead, but Texas is finding that tempo that coach Sean Miller craves. Dailyn Swains finds Tramon Mark on the fast break, and Mark drains a three while getting fouled.
