Thousands of supporters gathered in Corpus Christi Tuesday for President Donald Trump’s visit, with crowds lining Port Ave. for a chance to see him speak.

A sea of red hats stretched toward Whataburger Field as people waited outside the venue. Despite morning rain, supporters remained eager to attend. Organizers reached capacity inside, and a screen was set up outside for those unable to get in.

Among those in attendance was Corpus Christi resident Jason Juranek, who spent 12 hours painting a portrait of Trump the day before the rally.

“I was inspired yesterday,” said Juranek. “We got tickets last week. I thought to myself, I woke up yesterday and The Lord spoke to me and said this is your chance if you want to do this.”

Across the street, a small group of protesters held signs as local, state and federal agencies worked together on security.

The visit came seven days before the midterm election, as Trump sought to build support for Republicans.

Among the supporters was 18-year-old Paris Guthrie, who said he will be heading to the polls for the first time.

“This is my first year voting,” Guthrie said. “I’m pretty excited. I’ll be voting Paxton. All the stuff I’ve heard. I’m pretty excited. It means the world to me to serve and vote this year.”

Before the rally, Guthrie hoped to hear the issues that are important to him.

“Oilfield topics, and bringing gas prices down,” he said. “Just touching base about that, and the war in the Middle East.”

Other supporters encouraged voters to make their voices heard before Election Day.
