I swear, I see someone from Lubbock complaining about their landlord on Facebook at least once a week.

During the summer, there were endless broken air-conditioner situations.

A few weeks ago, someone showed off a mysterious leak that turned their ceiling into a mushroom farm.

And, just yesterday, a lady was griping about a security deposit she never got back. (Truthfully, don’t think I’ve gotten one back either…uhh…ever.)

Of course, every story has more than one side; still, I can’t help but wonder how many Lubbock landlords get away with too much.

Rent isn’t exactly pocket change in 2026, and I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect the place you hang your hat to be properly maintained.

According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, generally landlords have a legal responsibility to make a timely effort to repair conditions that materially affect a tenant’s safety or health, assuming it meets the requirements.

Texas law protects tenants from certain types of retaliation for exercising their rights. Don’t be afraid to report your landlord if something feels off.

Of course, renters have responsibilities to uphold their end of the lease, too. You can’t just destroy someone’s property and expect them to pay for it. It goes both ways.

There is a massive difference between a difficult tenant and a person who just wants their toilet to work.

Walking to the gas station to go #2 gets old after a while.

Of course, not every Lubbock landlord is a bad one.

My parents, for example, own a few properties and are actually pretty decent landlords. They’ve had the same tenants in Tech Terrace for years and years, so they must be doing something right.

Thinking back on it, I’ve had more good experiences than bad with landlords here.

Have I just gotten lucky?
