The team-backed political action committee supporting Plano’s proposed Stars arena funding has raised more than $1M, compared with “about $13,000 for opponents,” according to Lilly Kersh of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Most of that advantage “comes directly from the Stars.” Campaign finance records show that the team’s corporate entity “contributed more than $980,000 to Victory Green Plano,” the PAC campaigning for Proposition A. The ballot measure “asks voters to approve up to five taxes to help fund a city-owned arena for the NHL team.” The competing Stop the Stars Arena committee, formed by residents, has “raised around $13,000 from a few dozen Plano residents,” according to the latest campaign finance records. Victory Green Plano has “sent texts, bought billboard ads, paid for online advertisements and sent mailers to Plano residents.” The Stars say that a Plano arena would “place the team closer to many season-ticket holders,” while city officials say that it “could help revive The Shops at Willow Bend” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/28).
