EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A family in El Paso’s Desert Spring neighborhood is searching for temporary housing after weekend flooding severely damaged their home, leaving it uninhabitable and facing potentially six-figure repair costs.
Ajay, his wife, Manila, and their family returned to the home Sunday morning and discovered the extent of the damage. Ajay said floodwater reached about four feet inside, destroying nearly everything on the first floor.
“Everything that was on the first floor, pretty much everything was destroyed,” Ajay said.
Ajay said a city inspector determined the home was unsafe to live in and warned the family not to enter without assistance.
Water also reached electrical outlets, raising additional safety concerns.
The family had lived in the home for about two and a half years. Ajay said they never expected flooding of this severity in El Paso.

“When I moved to El Paso, I never imagined something like this could happen to us,” Ajay said. “Living in a desert area and a dry land, we never expected this to happen to our house.”
Ajay said the family filed a claim with its homeowners insurance company, but the claim was denied because the policy did not cover surface water or flooding.
He said the family did not have separate flood insurance because the home was not in a designated flood zone.
According to Ajay, a contractor estimated repairs could cost around $100,000 or more. He said the cost of repairing the damage could exceed the home’s value.
The family is still responsible for its mortgage and other bills while trying to find an apartment. Ajay said he does not know when, or if, they will be able to return to the home.
As the family works through the damage, Ajay said neighbors in Enchanted Hills have helped them retrieve belongings from the house.
The family is now raising money to cover temporary housing, immediate living expenses and the long process of rebuilding.
“We are pretty devastated,” Ajay said.
Ajay and Manila have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser, “Help Ajay Recover After Home Flood,” to help their family navigate the financial challenges following the flooding.
Those who want to help can donate or share the fundraiser online.
The family says its most urgent need is securing an apartment while determining the next steps for their damaged home.
