Plano West Senior High School student Tatum Dale brought art and cosmetology together for a recent class project, transforming her father’s hair into a hand-painted tribute to Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.”

Dale, a Career and Technical Education and AVID student, developed the concept independently for the TONI&GUY Cosmetology program’s Total Look Project. The assignment capped the first nine weeks of the program and required students to plan and execute a complete look, including a haircut, color, styling and presentation.

Using skills she learned in the program, Dale cut and lightened her father’s hair before hand-painting the artwork on his head. Her father, who is a barber, served as her live model.

Dale’s presentation included an overview of Van Gogh’s career and explored how art can impact generations. The project let her combine technical skills with creative expression, taking an original concept from planning through presentation.

The father-daughter team also shared their skills with the community, volunteering to provide haircuts for attendees at the Plano ISD Back to School Fair, a collaborative event between Plano ISD and the City of Plano over the summer.

“Through the Toni & Guy program, I have gained valuable industry connections, growth, opportunities and a place to express my creativity freely,” Dale said. “Both the beauty industry and life beyond high school require empathy, active listening and dedication, qualities I have grown through my time in cosmetology. Thanks to TONI&GUY, I am prepared for a future that will provide income, connection and creative expression.
