A $270 million TEXRail expansion broke ground Thursday.

Trinity Metro is extending the commuter train line to the Near Southside and medical district.

Here’s what to know about where the train will go — and when you can ride it:

travel from Near Southside to DFW Airport

The 2.1 mile extension will continue south from the Fort Worth T&P Station to the new Near Southside station, south of Mistletoe Boulevard and west of Baylor Scott & White All Saint Medical Center.

With the extension, riders would be able to take TEXRail from Near Southside to DFW Airport.

The extension is expected to be ready to ride by mid-2030.

“Fort Worth has often been labeled as a city that didn’t understand or didn’t invest in transit and multimodal transportation,” Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said at Thursday’s groundbreaking. “I think today really is a reflection that we understand what the future can hold.”

The extension will make travel easier for both patients receiving care in the medical district as well as employees coming to the area’s rapidly expanding hospitals, such as upgrades to the JPS campus and Cook Children’s.

The new station, according to a site plan provided by Trinity Metro, will have a parking lot and a bus turnaround.

TEXRail’s commuter-friendly dreams

The 27-mile TEXRail line, which opened in 2019, runs from Fort Worth to Terminal B at DFW Airport.

The original project came in $80 million under budget, and the savings were used to fund the extension.

Trinity Metro has goals to extend the line as far as Tarleton State University’s Fort Worth campus, off the Chisholm Trail Parkway north of FM 1187.
