San Antonio cracks down on data centers, requires council approval for every project

Downtown San Antonio, Texas.

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) —

San Antonio is tightening restrictions on data centers, limiting new facilities to heavy commercial and industrial areas and requiring City Council approval for every project.

The council approved the measure 9-2 Thursday, with Councilwomen Misty Spears and Marc Whyte voting against it.

The new rules give council members authority to review each proposal and impose conditions, including requirements addressing site plans, emergency response and community concerns. Data centers will also remain prohibited over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone.

The decision follows growing concerns about data centers’ electricity and water consumption, noise and potential air quality impacts.

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones pushed for additional restrictions, including noise limits, public meetings and air quality monitoring, but her proposal failed.

Opponents warned the approval process could drive investment outside San Antonio, while supporters said residents deserve a voice before projects move forward.
