SAN ANTONIO – Police have identified a 20-year-old man arrested in connection with a suspected road rage shooting that left another man critically injured Tuesday evening in a busy shopping center parking lot on the South Side.

San Antonio Police identified the suspect as Luke Perez, 20, who was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Perez was arrested following the shooting around 5 p.m. near Southwest Military Drive and South Zarzamora Street.

Investigators said Perez and the victim had gotten out of their vehicles when Perez allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the victim in the torso. Gunfire also struck the victim’s vehicle.

Police initially described the shooting as a possible road rage incident involving three vehicles. Police said one vehicle had been crashing into another before the shooting.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

A witness shared video from the scene showing the victim lying on the ground after the shooting. Alicia Alvarado, who was inside Cash of America across the street, said a woman ran into the business screaming for help.

Alvarado said the wounded man was holding his chest and pleading for help as the woman tried to stop the bleeding.

He was holding his chest and he saying help me I just got shot I don’t wanna die I don’t wanna die,” Alvarado said.

She said the victim’s family later arrived at the scene, making an already emotional situation even more difficult to witness.

Alvarado also said the violence has left some customers afraid to return to the shopping center.

Police arrested Perez following the shooting. Investigators have not released additional details about what led to the confrontation.

Perez is being held in the Bexar County Jail on $150,000 bond.
