SOCORRO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — La Purísima Socorro Mission has been awarded a $500,000 capital grant to help restore the historic building, but the community must raise an equal amount locally to secure the matching funds.
The grant and local match will contribute $1 million toward the community’s $2 million restoration campaign, which is still underway.
Organizers are seeking donations, sponsors and community partners to help meet the match and fund the broader project.
The money will support repairs to the mission’s adobe walls and historic plaster, drainage improvements and a full roof replacement.
The work is intended to improve the building’s safety and durability while preserving its historic character.

A fundraiser held Oct. 17 at Bodega Loya brought together local chefs, performers, sponsors and community supporters.
Proceeds and awareness from the event will contribute to the ongoing campaign, organizers said.
This grant is an extraordinary opportunity for Socorro Mission and for the entire community, but it is also a call to action,” said Marty Loya, a restoration campaign representative. “We must continue building on that momentum to secure the match and reach the full restoration goal.
La Purísima Socorro Mission was selected from a national applicant pool. The 2026 National Fund for Sacred Places cohort includes 30 congregations receiving more than $9 million in capital grants, along with technical assistance in planning, community engagement and fundraising.
The fund is operated by Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since its creation, it has awarded or pledged more than $42 million to 197 congregations in the United States and Puerto Rico.
