HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man wearing a Halloween costume was shot while trying to get into someone else’s apartment, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said it happened at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Bering Drive near Westheimer in the Greater Uptown area around 2:20 a.m. on Thursday.
“He’s asleep on the couch. His girlfriend is asleep with the 1-year-old baby in the other room, and he wakes up hearing his door jingling. Someone’s trying to get in. It appears the individual even tried to kick the door one time,” explained Lt. R. Willkens.
From there, police said the resident got an AR-15 and eventually opened the door to figure out what the man wanted.
Police said the intruder then forced his way into the apartment and was saying things like, “This is my apartment.”
HPD said the two struggled back and forth as the resident was trying to push the intruder out of the apartment before he finally shot him once.
The department said the man likely won’t survive.
Police said the man was wearing a Halloween costume, and they are looking into whether he possibly came home drunk from a Halloween party and was trying to get into the wrong apartment. Police said he does live nearby.
HPD said the shooter is cooperating with the investigation.
