The shooting happened at a home on Lamar Street near Mel Walters Way. Police say the 34-year-old arrived looking to fight a 21-year-old man and a woman. He left after a brief confrontation, then returned and allegedly tried to run them over with his vehicle.
The 21-year-old fired several shots, hitting the driver in the stomach and arm, according to police. The wounded man drove away, crashed into another vehicle and continued until he reached Coleman Street near North Walters Street. He got out, walked about two blocks and called for help. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The two people at the home were not injured.
Next-door neighbor Amanda Waters said she heard arguing before the gunfire.
“As I slowly opened the door, I heard some arguing and the guns go off. I quick closed my door, locked it and went and woke up my husband,” Waters said.
Another resident, Jeff Burks, said he has lived in the neighborhood for more than 15 years and has grown accustomed to hearing gunshots.
“They’re not shooting for me. I mean, the gunshots are going to be there whether they’re shooting at me or someone else,” Burks said.
The family who lives in the home where the incident happened told News 4 San Antonio they provided surveillance footage to the San Antonio Police Department. They declined to comment because the investigation is ongoing.
Police say no arrests have been made and the 21-year-old suspect fled after the shooting. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was self-defense. Police are considering an aggravated assault charge, which could be upgraded to murder if the 34-year-old dies.
