Michael Dell started out selling computers from his University of Texas dorm room with $1,000 in his pocket. Four decades later, he’s sitting on a fortune estimated at $242.5 billion, thanks to the company he founded when he was 19 and the tech infrastructure his company now provides to help power the AI boom. Not bad for a college dropout.

His wife, Susan, has had her own run of entrepreneurial ventures, from launching the luxury fashion label Phi to helping steer the couple’s philanthropic work. Married since 1989, the Dells have four children and a foundation that has committed billions of dollars to children’s health, education, and family stability. Among their recent commitments: $6.25 billion for investment accounts for 25 million American children, alongside a separate $750 million donation toward a new hospital and research campus at their alma mater.

Of course, the Dells’ spending power extends well beyond philanthropy. Michael runs private investment firm DFO Management, formerly MSD Capital, which has stakes in everything from real estate to hospitality. The couple reportedly travel aboard a fleet that includes Gulfstream jets, and Michael’s car collection allegedly runs from a Porsche Carrera GT to a Boxster. He also joined the ownership group of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2026.

Then there are the homes. The Dells’ reported property portfolio spans a modernist Texas compound nicknamed the Castle, a $100 million Manhattan penthouse, and an oceanfront estate in Hawaii. They’ve also been linked to a residence on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, though the details of that property remain unclear. Here’s a closer look at the homes associated with one of America’s largest fortunes.

The Castle — Austin, Texas

The couple’s longtime home in Austin is much more than your average mansion. Known as the Castle, the roughly 33,000-square-foot house was designed by architect Charles Gwathmey of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and completed in 1997. It sits on 119 acres in Westlake Hills, on a man-made plateau that takes advantage of views over downtown Austin. Inside, an elliptical staircase connects the home’s multiple levels, and a curved roof arches over an indoor lap pool. There are also outdoor pools, a tennis court, a six-car garage, and a two-story entertainment pavilion with glass doors that open onto landscaped terraces. The eight-bedroom, 13-bathroom property has been the Dells’ primary residence for decades.

When the Dells want a change of scenery, they have an oceanfront retreat on Hawaii’s Big Island. Known as the Raptor Residence, the property covers 4.3 acres across three lots in Kūkiʻo Golf and Beach Club, a gated community on the Kona Coast. The seven-bedroom house measures roughly 18,500 square feet, with a collection of tropical pavilions and plenty of outdoor areas to enjoy the waterfront setting. The property was reportedly acquired around 2002 and was assessed at $64.7 million in 2014, though other estimates have put its value closer to $100 million.

Kūkiʻo has attracted its share of high-profile homeowners, including investor Paul Hazen and the late Intel cofounder Gordon Moore. Actor Matthew McConaughey also bought a home in the community in 2020 for about $7.8 million. Michael has a separate connection to the area through his investment firm, which has been involved with the nearby Four Seasons Resort Hualālai.

In 2014, Michael made a $100.47 million bet on Manhattan real estate, buying a duplex penthouse at One57, the glass skyscraper on Billionaires’ Row. The six-bedroom residence spans 10,923 square feet across the supertall tower’s 89th and 90th floors, with views overlooking Central Park. At the time, the deal made history as New York City’s first home sale above the $100 million mark. The buyer’s identity remained a mystery for four years, until reports revealed that the Dell Technologies founder was behind the purchase. Since then, Dell has brought in Miró Rivera Architects to work on a renovation.

The Dells currently own two Boston apartments. The couple paid $10.9 million for a penthouse on the 59th floor of Millennium Tower in December 2016, buying it through an LLC along with two parking spaces. The roughly 4,110-square-foot apartment has three bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and a powder room. More than 14-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the views over Boston Harbor, the Charles River, and the city skyline, while a private terrace offers a little outdoor space high above downtown.

Inside, the custom Christopher Peacock kitchen has oak cabinetry, Calacatta Extra marble countertops, and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, while the primary suite has a walk-in dressing area and a marble-clad bathroom. Residents also get access to the building’s private club, with an indoor pool, fitness and wellness facilities, a screening room, lounge, library, dining, and concierge service.

After several attempts to sell it, the Dells are now taking the auction route. A sealed-bid sale is scheduled to close October 29, 2026, with a $6.5 million reserve. The apartment has barely been used, according to the listing agent.

The Dells’ other Boston penthouse is at One Dalton Street in Back Bay, a 61-story tower that ranks among New England’s tallest residential buildings. Michael was reported to be under contract for a top-floor duplex in 2017, with the sale ultimately closing in January 2020 for $34 million. The roughly 7,300-square-foot residence spans two floors and is part of the Four Seasons Private Residences, where homeowners get the perks of a hotel-style setup alongside their own private space.

The couple tried to sell the penthouse in 2023, initially asking around $35 million before cutting the price to $29 million. It was eventually taken off the market, and there’s no confirmed record of a completed sale.

6D Ranch — Austin, Texas

The Dells’ other Texas property is a little more laid-back in spirit, at least on paper. A few miles from their main home, 6D Ranch takes its name from the six members of the Dell family and includes a modern lake house designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects. The approximately 6,380-square-foot house puts a contemporary spin on a Texas lake cabin, with an open living, dining, and kitchen area that leads straight out to a terrace overlooking Lake Austin.

The wider property also includes a boathouse, pool house, roof deck, and outdoor recreational facilities. The total acreage and purchase price haven’t been established, but the ranch has made local news for another reason: an agricultural tax exemption tied to its recreational use, including hunting by family and friends.
