The number of Tarrant County early voters in this year’s midterm election is 47% higher than 2022, Texas’ last midterm.

Friday marked the last day of in-person early voting in Texas for an election that features high-profile races for U.S. Senate and Texas governor, as well as down ballot races like a slate of legislative candidates and the contest for Tarrant County judge.

In total, 571,950 Tarrant County voters cast ballots between Oct. 19 and Oct. 30, according to numbers from the Tarrant County Elections Administration. Friday, the final day of early voting, drew the most people to the polls, with 62,656 people casting ballots at the county’s 47 early voting locations.

By comparison, there were 389,285 early voters in 2022, when the gubernatorial race between Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, and Democrat Beto O’Rourke was the headliner. This year, Abbott is facing state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, an Austin Democrat, is what has shaped up to be a competitive race.

The race for U.S. Senate election between Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Democrat James Talarico, an Austin-area state representative, tops the ticket this year. Polls have generally given Talarico a narrow lead, as Republicans try to hold onto their control of Congress.

In 2018, when O’Rourke faced U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz for Senate, Tarrant County saw 432,756 early voters.

Early voting this year has lagged behind 2024, a presidential election year when President Donald Trump, a Republican, faced former Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, in the race for the White House. That election drew 635,261 early voters.

Voters can continue to cast ballots early by mail. Tarrant County has received 21,122 absentee ballots as of Friday, according to Tarrant County Elections Administration.

Tarrant County is home to more than 1.37 million registered voters, compared to 1.3 million in 2024, 1.26 million in 2022 and 1.13 million in 2018.
