La Vernia rallies for 25-21 win over Ricebirds in district finale
For three quarters, the El Campo Ricebirds had the district champion La Vernia Bears on the ropes. But the host Bears held the ‘Birds scoreless in the second half while getting two touchdowns themselves to capture a 25-21 victory.
“I was really proud of how our kids came out. We jumped on them early,” said Ricebird head coach Travis Reeve. “We traveled down there with the intention to win and we gave ourselves chances, but we just came up short.”
Besides the 18-point loss to Bay City two weeks ago, the Ricebirds other three losses have been by a combined nine points— a one-point overtime loss to Needville (36-35) and back-to-back four-point losses to Calhoun (35-31) and La Vernia (25-21).
“We’re right there. We just gotta continue to put ourselves in a position to win and you know, we’re gunna get a win and the playoffs would be a great time to get those wins,” said Reeve.
The Ricebirds had the ball with just over three minutes left in the game and worked the ball into La Vernia territory before a 4th-and-5 slant pass fell incomplete giving the Bears the eventual win.
A 50-yard touchdown pass from Colt Reeve to Andy Russell and extra point by Landon Smith gave El Campo a 7-0 lead with 7:59 left in the first quarter.

The Bears then kicked a 23-yard field goal with 6:49 left in the second quarter before Reeve connected with Kylon Taylor on a 27-yard touchdown pass as the Ricebirds took a 21-10 lead into the half after Smith’s extra point.
With 2:22 left in the third quarter, the Bears hit paydirt on a one-yard run by Null and got the two-point conversion on a run by Null to cut El Campo’s lead down to 21-18 and with 7:04 left in the game, got the eventual winning touchdown on another one-yard run by Null.
