Legally blind teacher one class away from degree needs community support to graduate

  • November 14, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Linda Johnson creates a classroom where every student feels valued and capable, drawing from her own experience of overcoming challenges that others might not immediately understand.

The Hutchison Middle School educator is a mother, grandmother, breast cancer survivor, and legally blind.

For 15 years, she has dedicated herself to teaching students who learn differently, helping them find success in their own unique ways.

“It has taken me almost 30 years to finish school, I was just bounded and determined to finish,” Johnson said. “I feel like this is my calling this is where I’m supposed to be.”

Johnson’s path to becoming a certified teacher began at Texas Tech University, but life circumstances and financial difficulties forced her to step away from her studies.

She later earned her associate’s degree from South Plains College and is now pursuing her bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at Wayland Baptist University.

She’s just one class away from graduation, but a $5,700 balance is preventing her from enrolling and completing her degree next year.

Johnson’s determination stems from her own experiences with feeling different as a student.

“Being legally blind within itself is an obstacle. Also, I always thought I was different in school,” she said.

Johnson uses her personal experiences to connect with her students and create an inclusive environment.

“I always tell my kids you don’t know people’s home life, don’t judge a book by its cover and that’s what we all need to do,” she said.

Her students inspire her daily, and now Johnson hopes her community can provide some inspiration in return. She remains determined to finish what she started, for herself, her children, her grandchildren, and every student who needs a teacher who believes in them.

Community members who want to support Johnson’s final step toward graduation can donate through her GoFundMe.
