Houston ISD officials said at a Thursday board meeting that Sherman Elementary School’s principal, Racquel Torres Rosenbalm, has died.

Rosenbalm served HISD for 18 years, officials said. Rosenbalm led Sherman for six years, and previously was an assistant principal, bilingual teacher and teacher specialist, according to Sherman Elementary’s webpage.

The district did not answer Houston Chronicle’s request for comment Thursday morning.

At the Thursday board meeting, HISD’s Central Division Chief Daniel Soliz said Rosenbalm “unexpectedly passed away yesterday,” adding that the educator had “dedication and passion.”

“Beginning her journey as a clerk, then a teacher, assistant principal, and most recently as the principal of Sherman Elementary since 2019, she was the dynamic and energetic leader whose impact reached far beyond the walls of her school,” Soliz said. “While her leadership will be deeply missed, the relationships she built and the connections she fostered will continue to inspire us.”

It is unclear who will be Sherman’s new principal.
