Police Chief William McManus said a woman had called 911 to report a possible disturbance, but the call was quickly disconnected.

Before that call came in, an officer and a cadet sitting in the hotel parking lot had been taunted by a man making gestures toward them. The officers initially ignored him — until the disturbance call came in.

Chief McManus said he shouted, “I’m not going back to prison,” then took off running, pulling a gun from his waistband. That’s when the exchange of gunfire began.

Three officers fired at the suspect, and two were hit in the arms. Both are expected to recover.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

At one point, police said, one of the officers jumped on the suspect during the gunfire.

The suspect’s name hasn’t been released, and investigators are still piecing together how the initial 911 call fits into the events that unfolded.

Police have closed the access road in front of the hotel while the investigation continues. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
