Texas football must do what it couldn’t in two tries last season to keep its hopes of a College Football Playoff alive: Beat Georgia.
So far, Texas hasn’t done enough while falling behind 14-3 at halftime. The Longhorns have committed seven penalties for 43 yards compared to no penalties for Georgia, and quarterback Arch Manning isn’t getting much help from his receivers, who have a handful of drops. Manning has thrown for 125 yards on 12-of-19 passing with one interception while Georgia counterpart Gunner Stockton is 14-of-17 for 139 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover.

A little presnap motion by Georgia, and London Humphreys runs free down the seam for a 30-yard touchdown catch from Gunner Stockton. Looks like safety Michael Taaffe got fooled on that. And Kirby Smart follows with a successful, surprising onside kick. Georgia is looking for the dagger.

Georgia is trying to answer the Texas score with a drive that has reached Texas territory. An offside call against Colin Simmons on a fourth-and-5 at midfield keeps the Bulldog drive alive.
Texas middle LB Anthony Hill Jr., one of the nation’s best, picks off Georgia QB Gunner Stockton at the Bulldog 36-yard line, and Texas capitalizes with a 7-yard dart to Ryan Wingo from Arch Manning for the score. Wingo was big on that short drive; he hauled in a brilliant third-down catch and drew a third-down penalty that set up Texas inside the 5-yard line.

The Texas defense has now forced four straight punts by Georgia, including one on the opening drive of the second half. The Bulldogs have just 64 yards on 18 plays on their past four drives. But the Texas offense can’t find any traction – again against Georgia – and punt away.
A fast start to the game led to three scores on the game’s first three drives, but both teams seemed to settle into the game. Texas will have to play better in the second half; seven penalties for 43 yards and a handful of drops hurt the Longhorns, especially compared to a penalty-free game by Georgia. But here’s a bad trend for Texas: Kirby Smart has won 61 straight games with Georgia when his team leads at halftime.

The Texas defense has played better the last few Georgia drives but these final 2 minutes seem huge for the Longhorns. Georgia has the ball at its on the 42-yard line, second and 7. And Georgia gets the ball first in the third quarter.
Arch Manning makes his first mistake, and it’s a bad one for the Texas quarterback. He throws high on third down to DeAndre Moore Jr, and safety KJ Bolden picks it off at the Georgia 16-yard line. Bad news for the Georgia defense, though; linebacker CJ Allen, the SEC’s leading tackler and the soul of the Georgia defense, has limped back to the locker room.

After a hold negates a 59-yard kickoff return by Ryan Niblett and helps pin Texas deep in their own territory, Arch Manning finds Emmett Mosley V for a 40-yard gain to midfield, but Ryan Wingo just misses the catch on a deep shot. A drop? Maybe, maybe not. But star receivers usually pull that in. Texas punts it away.
Georgia strikes again. QB Gunner Stockton finds Noah Thomas for the second time in the end zone, and this one is from 4 yards out. Thomas beat freshman Kade Phillips to the corner. So far, the Texas defense has no answer for Stockton, the Dawgs and Georgia offensive coordinator and play-caller Mike Bobo.

The Bulldogs are driving again, and the Texas defense must find away to slow down one of the most balanced offenses in the nation. Georgia QB Gunner Stockton has thrown for 69 yards and a TD on 8-of-9 passing, and Georgia has 34 yards rushing on four carries. That’s 103 yards on 13 plays, and Georgia is driving again at the start of the second quarter.
The second Texas drive isn’t nearly as efficient. The Longhorns get one yard on three plays and punt it away.

Georgia is the eighth-best touchdown red zone team in the nation, and the Dawgs show why. QB Gunner Stockton went six for seven for 57 yards on a 9-play, 75-yard touchdown drive capped by a 17-yard strike to Noah Thomas. Both offenses are humming early.
Texas opens the game with an impressive drive that ends with a 33-yard field goal from Mason Shipley. The Longhorns could have gotten a first down but a third-down drop by Ryan Wingo ends the drive. Texas showed lots of balance on the 13-play, 59-yard march, which is a good sign for UT for the rest of the game; the Longhorns ran for 33 yards on seven carries, Arch Manning threw for 31 yards, and the quarterback didn’t take a hit on five dropbacks.

GOLDEN: Is this the year Steve Sarkisian, Texas Longhorns finally solve the Georgia puzzle?
In the SEC’s game-day injury report, Texas didn’t list any players. That means all-American safety Michael Taaffe, who has missed the past two games after hand surgery, will play.
Georgia’s injury list includes the following players listed as out: WR Colbie Young, TE Ethan Barbour, WR Talyn Taylor, DB Kyron Jones and DL Jordan Hall.
