SAN ANTONIO — The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations announced the establishment of a regional Homeland Security Task Force to combat transnational criminal organizations in South Texas.
The task force was created under Executive Order 14159 signed by President Donald Trump on Jan. 20.
The task force has conducted several major operations, including a significant firearms seizure in the Laredo area.
On Oct. 23, agents intercepted 534 firearms and 31,482 rounds of ammunition from the Laredo area before they were to be trafficked into Mexico. Two men were charged with smuggling firearms and trafficking.
Other recent operations include disrupting the Tren de Aragua criminal organization in San Antonio on Nov. 16, resulting in the arrest of over 140 people from Venezuela, Honduras, Mexico and other South American countries.
The task force targets cartels, foreign terrorist organizations and transnational gangs involved in homicide, kidnapping, human trafficking, drug smuggling and money laundering.
“In close collaboration with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, we are dedicated to dismantling the cartels and criminal networks responsible for violent crime, human trafficking, and drug smuggling,” said FBI San Antonio Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran.
The task force includes multiple federal agencies and state partners, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Attorney’s offices for the Southern and Western Districts of Texas.
