Texas Goes Digital – And It’s About Time

If you’ve ever spent half your lunch break waiting at the DPS office or stared at a blinking cursor on some outdated state website wondering if it actually submitted, here’s some great news, Lubbock — the State of Texas is officially stepping into the 21st century.

The Texas Department of Information Resources just rolled out new features on its digital assistant, Texas by Texas (TxT) — and yes, it actually works. The platform already let you renew your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and even massage therapy licenses online, but now it’s expanding in a big way.

Now You Can Upgrade Your Driver’s License Online

One of the biggest wins for Lubbock families and young drivers: you can now upgrade a learner’s license to a provisional license online, as long as you’ve completed your driving test with a participating school.

That means fewer trips across town and fewer lines at DPS. And since this new feature lets teens aged 16–18 create limited-access TxT accounts, it’s a huge step toward modernizing how Texans — especially Lubbock’s next generation of drivers — handle their paperwork.

Amanda Crawford, Executive Director of the Texas Department of Information Resources, called the new features a “game changer” for Texans. I’ll second that.

Boaters, You’re Covered Too

If your happy place is Buffalo Springs Lake or Lake Alan Henry, TxT just made your weekends smoother. You can now renew your boat registration, order new ID cards, or replace lost decals — all from your phone or laptop. No more running around town looking for an open office or waiting for mail-in forms.

Texans Are Loving It

With a 93% satisfaction rating, TxT users are singing its praises. One Texan even said:

Quite frankly, the state isn’t supposed to be this efficient. Well done, Texas!

And honestly? They’re right. For a system built by the state, this one feels surprisingly easy — a true “life changer” for anyone who’s ever wasted a day dealing with paper forms.
