SAN ANTONIO – Some city council members and residents are expressing their frustration after Mayor Jones blocked a ‘no-cost gesture of support’ for educators.

On Wednesday, District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito expressed her frustration with Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones after Jones vetoed Gavito’s Council Consideration Request (CCR), which called for the City to work with local businesses to provide teacher discounts, advocate for teacher well-being, and receive regular updates on education issues.

Gavito said in a statement that the effort was intended to be a “simple, goodwill effort to show educators that the City of San Antonio values their work.”

“Teachers across San Antonio are overworked, underpaid, and under constant pressure from state-level politics,” said Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito. “Blocking a no-cost gesture of support sends the wrong message. This should have been about partnership and gratitude — not petty politics.”

At a city council meeting on Wednesday, it was also clarified by Councilwoman Gavito that the work would be carried out entirely by volunteer-based boards and commissions — the Small Business Advisory Commission and the City of San Antonio Higher Education Student Advisory Board.

“Our teachers deserve our support,” she said. “I remain committed to finding ways the City can stand with our educators — through action, not excuses.”

The four-member committee vote was split 2-2, with Councilmembers McKee-Rodriguez (District 2) and Mungia (District 4) voting for the item, while Mayor Jones and Councilmember Viagran (District 3) voted against the item.
