LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Police say 18-year-old Irvin Cortes is now dead following a Saturday night crash.
Just before 8:30 p.m., officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash with injuries at East 10th Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard.
Crash investigators say it appears a black Audi was attempting to make a left turn onto East 10th Street when it was struck by a white Jeep driving north in the 1000 block of MLK Jr. Blvd.
The driver of the Audi, Deveron Ogunye, 18, and his two passengers, Irvin and Francisco Cortes, both 18, got out of the car to check on the driver and passengers of the Jeep. The driver of the Jeep was identified as Shanikka Owens, 38.
Investigators say Irvin was standing in the roadway behind the Jeep when he was struck by a GMC Yukon, driven by Roderick Taylor, 29, northbound on MLK Jr. Blvd.
Irvin was taken to UMC with serious injuries where he later died.
Owens and her two juvenile passengers suffered minor injuries. Another passenger, Shakyra Owens, 22, suffered moderate injuries. A fourth passenger, Ariyah Johnson, 17, was not injured.
A single passenger in the GMC Yukon, Samantha Castillo, 24, suffered minor injuries.
All five were transported by EMS to Covenant Medical Center. Taylor also suffered minor injuries but refused treatment.
The crash remains under investigation.
