A cold front barreling toward Texas is expected to bring rain to the region, including San Antonio.
And now, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the Interstate 35 corridor that includes Bandera, Bexar, Blanco, Burnet, Comal, Edwards, Gillespie, Hays, Kendall, Kerr, Kinney, Llano, Medina, Real, Travis, Uvalde, Val Verde, and Williamson counties. The watch begins at midnight on Thursday, November 20, and will be in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.
According to the NWS, there is a heavy potential for rain Wednesday night through Thursday night. Meteorologists are forecasting pockets of heavy rain with the potential for 1 to 3 inches of rain. But isolated areas may see up to 6 inches, NWS officials said.
Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, the NWS said in its flood watch. Flooding may also occur in areas with poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings are also prone to flooding.
The greater San Antonio-Austin area has the highest likelihood of thunderstorms on Thursday, with chances around 80%, according to previous MySA reporting. The possibility of thunderstorms will persist through the weekend, fluctuating between 20% and 80%. Forecasters say the storms are unlikely to be severe, but hail can’t be ruled out.
Other than the rain, the cold front is expected to drop temperatures into the 70s in San Antonio from the well-above-average temperatures the area has been experiencing.
