Less than seven months after opening, Utah-based coffee chain Beans & Brews has permanently closed its outpost at 9139 Grissom Rd. The shutter signals an early retreat from the South Central Texas market; the chain has only been in San Antonio (and Texas) since 2024.

The chain didn’t issue a formal announcement, and the outpost is still listed on the corporate website, but an employee at another location confirmed the October 12 closure. The phone number associated with the store has been disconnected.

Brothers Jeff and Kevin Laramie opened the first Beans & Brews coffeehouse in 1993 in a prime location next to Salt Lake City’s hangout, Liberty Park. The company refined the process of high-altitude roasting, which required special tweaks similar to high-altitude baking.

The company first came to San Antonio in January 2024, rapidly opening two other coffee shops. Alamo City was its first dip into Texas expansion, but Beans & Brews has since opened in suburban Fort Worth and Houston.

Unlike some of the speedier coffee chains that are taking over San Antonio, Beans & Brews is more focused on the experience, offering inside seating and an aesthetic and menu similar to Starbucks. Although there are plenty of decadent drinks like blended pumpkin pie “fritalias,” the chain also offers healthier alternatives like lattes and matchas mixed with a protein boost.

The food menu generally follows suit with egg bites and avocado toasts, though crowd favorites like bacon, egg, and cheese croissants are not overlooked. But Beans & Brews generally caters to all diets, offering several dairy-free and plant-based options.

Following the unexpected closing, the chain now has three locations serving North, Far West, and Central San Antonio. The closest outpost to the Grissom Road shop is only a short 10-minute drive away at 6507 W Loop 1604 N.
