2 hospitalized after group of Buddhist monks on nationwide peace walk struck by vehicle in Dayton

  • November 20, 2025

DAYTON, Texas – Authorities in Dayton are responding after a vehicle, which was struck by a truck on US-90, was pushed into two Buddhist monks who are part of a group walking across the country as part of a walk for peace.

The incident happened on US-90 near SH-99 Wednesday evening.

The eastbound lanes of US-90 remain shutdown in the area.

Dayton Police say there was a vehicle following behind the monks, who were walking on the shoulder, with its hazards on when a truck struck the vehicle, pushing it into the monks.

Two monks were taken to a hospital, one of them flown by helicopter with serious injuries to his lower body. The second man had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The group of about two dozen monks have been on a pilgrimage since Oct. 26 when they set off from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth.

The Walk for Peace, according to the group, is a 2,300 mile walk where the monks would travel to Washington D.C.

“The Walk for Peace will traverse ten states on its route to Washington, D.C., stopping at state capitols, historic landmarks, and local communities to share its message and invite moments of reflection and prayer,” a press release from the group stated.
