LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) -Lubbock Public Health is warning residents about potential exposure to wild animals after several rabid bats were discovered in the city.
Rabies is a deadly disease that can spread between animals and humans through bites and scratches. The disease is almost always fatal once symptoms begin, making prevention crucial for public safety.
Since the bats were discovered, Lubbock health officials are urging residents to avoid any wild mammal, including skunks, foxes and coyotes. These animals are most likely to carry the disease.
If residents see a bat, health officials specifically recommend keeping children and pets away from the animal and calling animal control immediately. If a bat has contact with a pet or family member, animal control will coordinate testing for free.
Officials also encourage residents to ensure their pets’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date as an additional precautionary measure.
