Shirley was a former Major League Baseball player who was also honored by the Hooks with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Ray Texans Hall of Famer Bart Shirley has died after a lengthy illness.

Shirley was a multisport star for Yay before going on to play basball for the University of Texas. After his Longhorns career, the infielder signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ organization and eventually made his big league debut in 1964.

He played with the Dodgers and Mets for parts of four seasons. Shirley then worked with the MLB Players’ Association to try and get his lifetime pension after the league changed the policy in 1980, but ultimately was not made retroactive to former players.

Shirley was recognized by the Corpus Christi Hooks with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and he also served as a longtime usher at Whataburger Field.
