Steve Sarkisian described the departures of Jerrick Gibson and Will Stone from the Texas football program as “essentially opting out” during a call Wednesday with reporters. 

Tuesday, the Longhorns removed Gibson, a sophomore running back, and Stone, a senior kicker, from their roster.

“They wanted to redshirt and transfer,” Sarkisian said.

Gibson had accumulated 529 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 19 games as a Longhorn, operating primarily in a short-yardage role. Stone appeared in 47 games, almost exclusively as a kickoff specialist.

Sarkisian explained that the move was brought about in part because of the influence of the redshirt rule. Players can appear in up to four games in any particular season and remain eligible for a redshirt, so long as they haven’t previously taken one. Both Stone and Gibson had appeared in four games in 2025, meaning another appearance would burn their redshirt and cost them a season of eligibility.

In the era of revenue sharing and NIL, burning a redshirt season carries financial consequences. An extra season of eligibility presents players with an extra opportunity to earn money.

Sarkisian has advocated for a rule change to eliminate the redshirt entirely, and instead give every player five years of collegiate eligibility, thus removing the incentive to, as he put it, opt out. 

“I think it’s a terrible position to put these players in to make these decisions right now,” he said. “There’s money involved. There’s revenue sharing. There’s NIL. There’s different factors. I think it’s putting agents and family members and student-athletes in a difficult position to make business decisions in the middle of the season. That’s where we’re at.

“One happened to be a senior who hadn’t redshirted, and so he’s trying to preserve a redshirt year. One is a true sophomore that played as a true freshman that’s trying to preserve three years of eligibility. I understand all that.”

Sarkisian also indicated that he would support the SEC increasing its football scholarship limit, which currently sits at 85 players, to help his team stock up more depth. Last year’s House settlement allows for up to 105 scholarships at each program with the removal of walk-ons, but the SEC has not yet adopted that policy. 

On the field, Sarkisian said he expects a collection of running backs to absorb Gibson’s short-yardage duties, rather than designating a single short-yardage back. He touted Quintrevion Wisner, CJ Baxter, James Simon and Christian Clark as players who could see the field in that situation.

“We’ve got ample bodies,” he said. “So we should be OK in that aspect of it all.” 

Mason Shipley, who has handled field-goal duties for the Longhorns, will also take on kickoff responsibilities moving forward, Sarkisian said, with Stone opting to preserve his redshirt. 

“When a player asks to do that, I thank them for their time and I wish them the best of luck,” Sarkisian said. “What else are we supposed to do at that juncture? These are the rules that we’ve put in place and so we’ve got to operate within the parameters of the rules.”
