The City of Austin found itself in a steep hole financially, so it posed a question to residents to increase their property taxes by 20%. It was known as Proposition Q on the Nov. 4 ballot, and it aimed to generate $110 million for the city to help fund essential services, according to city leaders. However, Prop Q failed, with 63% of voters saying they don’t want another tax increase.

Austin’s historic Paramount and State Theatres to receive long-awaited restorations
The Austin Theatre Alliance announced its plans Wednesday for a $65 million reimagining of the 110-year-old Paramount Theatre and the 90-year-old State Theatre. The nonprofit responsible for operating both venues said the renovations will honor their historic pasts while laying the groundwork for increased accessibility, enhanced patron experience and expanded programming opportunities that will “elevate Austin’s live performance landscape.”
