The Texas State Bobcats (1-4) earned their first victory of the season after defeating the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (1-3) 53-43 Thursday afternoon at Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Sophomore guard Saniya Burks scored 21 points throughout the game, making her the only Bobcat to reach double-digit scoring.

Starting forwards Kyra Anderson and Kyla McBride each scored nine points. Anderson led the team in rebounds (9) and blocks (3).

Despite leading the Islanders in scoring, senior forward K’Nari Holliday’s 14 points were not enough to take the win over the Bobcats.

After Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored the first two points of the game, Texas State quickly responded with 11 unanswered points, five apiece from both Burks and Anderson as they led the Bobcats to a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Bobcats continued this momentum into the second, scoring 22 points over the Islanders eight. At the end of the half, Texas State led 36-15.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered by scoring 24 points in the third, its highest scoring quarter of the day, in an attempt to close in on the Bobcats lead. Texas State were able to hold on to their lead 47-39 at the end of the third.

Both the Bobcats and Islanders tallied their lowest scoring quarters of the day in the fourth with Texas State scoring six and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scoring four. Despite the low scoring affair, the Bobcats remained in control of the game gaining the first win for the maroon and gold this season after four straight losses.

Texas State will return home to face the Tarleton State Texans, who are coming off of an 80-32 loss against No. 10 TCU.

Tip-off between the Bobcats and the Texans is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday Nov. 25 at Strahan Arena. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
