Families Helping Families distributes groceries during a giveaway.
A local nonprofit is seeking sponsors for its food giveaway this weekend, after a spike in need.
Families Helping Families is giving free groceries — including Thanksgiving turkeys — to 1,700 families on Saturday at locations across the greater Houston area.
Most of the locations are already at capacity, but families may still be able to sign up to attend a giveaway at Missouri City’s Sta-Mo Sports Park by calling 832-471-4172 or 832-471-4173 by 5 p.m. Friday.

Quincy Collins founded the organization 12 years ago after members of his church banded together to help a family that lost their home in a fire.
He said the interest in this year’s grocery giveaway is “unprecedented.”
“The phones have been ringing nonstop, but you know, we’re gonna try our best to accommodate as many families as we possibly can,” he said.
Collins said the organization will continue to accept sponsorships for the event until 5 p.m. Friday. The cost of sponsoring a family is $100. More information can be found on the nonprofit’s website.
Families Helping Families is one of several organizations providing food to Houston-area residents ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
The City Wide Club of America will host its annual Super Feast and give away meals at the George R. Brown Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
