San Antonio — SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Police Officers Association President Danny Diaz says he’s “tired of going to hospitals” after yet another shooting left two officers injured on the city’s West Side Wednesday morning.

Diaz says the department’s staffing shortage is stretching officers thin and limiting patrols in areas that need them most.

“Throughout the country, everyone has hit a shortage, and not that many people want this job,” Diaz said. “We are adding more officers, but it’s just a slow trickle.”

Diaz says the shortage is leading to less proactive policing, fewer officers available to patrol and deter crime before it happens.

He added that the problem extends beyond manpower, pointing to “Repeat Offenders” who continue to cycle through the justice system.

“We have to start asking why individuals with violent histories keep ending up back on our streets,” Diaz said.

According to Diaz, 20 San Antonio police officers have been shot in the last three years, a statistic he says highlights both the dangers officers face and the urgent need for change.

Both officers injured in Wednesday’s shooting are expected to recover. One of the officers shot is the son of a longtime San Antonio Police Officer.
