From star-studded galas to celebrity-packed art auctions, Dallas’ iconic Rachofsky House has long been a playground for the city’s elite-and now it’s on the market for $23 million.
The Rachofsky House, perched on the 8600 block of Preston Road, is a 9,062-square-foot modernist masterpiece designed by renowned architect Richard Meier in 1996. Sitting on 3.2 acres, the home’s white metal panels, floor-to-ceiling windows and glass-enclosed stairwell make it as much a piece of art as it is a residence. It is being listed by Faisal Halum of Compass.

Before opening The Warehouse, an 18,000-square-foot gallery space, in 2012, the house was the primary exhibition venue for Howard and Cindy Rachofsky’s extensive art collection. It also hosted the annual TWO X TWO gala and art auction, a benefit supporting the Dallas Museum of Art and amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. Over 25 years, the event raised more than $130 million and drew stars like Alan Cumming, Sharon Stone, Stanley Tucci, Diana Ross, Ricky Martin and CeeLo Green. The sale of the house follows the 2024 finale of the TWO X TWO event.

Howard Rachofsky told Artnet News that he’s been navigating estate planning and hopes to sell the property to someone who understands the significance of the space-that the house is “an artwork” and “part of a community.” The couple began seeking a buyer in April.
Living in a work of art
The house itself is just as much a work of art as the collection inside.
“Any structure can house a work of art-only a few can become it,” the listing says. Outside, a black granite patio, reflecting pool and private lake extend the architecture into nature, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. Ancient oaks and gently rolling lawns frame a lagoon-like pond, while sunlight moves through every room “like a steady docent-casting shadows, illuminating details, and transforming familiar rooms into living, changing forms.”

Inside, there’s a soaring double-height living room, a suspended study overlooking the grounds and a primary suite designed for both privacy and contemplation. The house balances public grandeur with intimate everyday living-a rare feat for a space of this size.
Why it matters
The Rachofsky House is significant not just for its celebrity history but also for its architectural pedigree. Richard Meier, born in 1934, is one of the world’s most celebrated modernist architects. Known for his geometric structures, signature white facades and use of light, Meier’s landmark projects include the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and numerous private residences worldwide. The Rachofsky House is a rare example of his residential work in Texas, embodying his philosophy of blending interior spaces with the natural landscape.

Several high-profile figures have also invested in Richard Meier–designed homes, highlighting the architect’s cachet among the elite. Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad owns a Meier-designed residence on Malibu’s famed Carbon Beach, while fashion icon Calvin Klein purchased two floors of a Meier-designed tower in New York.
