It’s about that time when publications far and wide start pushing out their end-of-year “best of” lists, from the top albums of 2025 to the best restaurants. Texas Monthly recently published “The Best Mexican and Tex-Mex Bites of 2025,” a list curated by the magazine’s taco editor, José R. Ralat, who praise a San Antonio bar for one of its puro San Anto dishes.
Gimme Gimme’s blue corn crispy dogs got a mention on the Texas Monthly list, which highlighted the dishes Mexican roots and ingredients that include Akaushi beef franks, Kraft Singles and nixtamilized corn tortillas. MySA had its own coverage of Gimme Gimme’s take on the locally beloved dish, which courted some controversy upon dropping on the menu.

The crispy dogs, which Gimme Gimme dropped in summer 2025, were something of a conversation starter for online circles, some of which saw the color of the dogs as something to criticize. At the time, we spoke to chef Paul Morales, who makes the blue corn tortillas used by Gimme Gimme under his business, Ancient Heirloom Grains. He explained that the origins of blue corn go deeper than some people think.
“If you go into Mexico proper, a lot of the tortillas are different-colored, especially in Oaxaca, which is where we usually source our corn from. The people that we get our corn from have been growing corn in that region for their family for hundreds of years,” Morales told MySA.
To date, Gimme Gimme continues to serve crispy dogs as a Monday special from 5 p.m. to midnight.
