Defending Class 6A Division II state champion Vandegrift and six-time state champion Lake Travis are among nine Central Texas teams that have advanced to the third round of the UIL state football playoffs this week. Vandegrift had an easy time against San Antonio Brandeis during an area playoff win Friday, winning 37-7. Lake Travis, meanwhile, needed a stellar defensive effort to outlast San Antonio Brennan 13-7.
Other Austin-area teams that advanced were Dripping Springs, Weiss, Bastrop, San Marcos, Wimberley, Llano and Granger.
It was a tough week for several area teams that had high hopes of making a deep run in the playoffs. Among the teams that suffered setbacks were Cedar Park, Georgetown, LBJ, Anderson, Hutto, Pflugerville, Connally, Liberty Hill and Lampasas.
Among the top games this week is Vandegrift vs. San Marcos. While it’s no surprise that the Vipers have reached the third round, San Marcos is coming off an 0-10 record in 2024.
