AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas System extended a tuition initiative to undergraduate students at its health institutions on Thursday after approving the same program for only academic undergrads last year.
The program, known as Promise Plus, came about to cover tuition for students with combined household incomes of $100,000 maximum, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Only undergraduates at UT’s nine academic institutions, including UT Austin, UT Dallas and UT El Paso, could benefit from Promise Plus.
Now, undergraduates at its health institutions — UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Medical Branch at Galveston, UT Health Science Center at Houston, UT Health Sceince Center at San Antonio and UT MD Anderson Cancer Center — can apply for the program. Applicants “must be full-time students and Texas residents with unmet need to qualify,” according to the Statesman.
Funding for Promise Plus will come from the aforementioned health institutions, the 2022-founded Promise Plus Endowment and a 2024 investment from the Available University Fund.
