EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Skyler Locklear threw a touchdown and rushed for two more scores to lead the UTEP Miners to a 35-17 victory over Sam Houston on Wednesday.
UTEP snaps a four game losing streak moves to 2-5 (1-2 CUSA). Sam Houston falls to 0-7 (0-4 CUSA).
At halftime UTEP led 14-10. In the third quarter, Locklear scrambled and rushed for a 15-yard touchdown, his second of the night. Sam Houston responded with Lonnie Adkism catching a screen pass from Mabrey Mattauer and taking it in for a 13-yard score. In the fourth quarter, UTEP pulled away as Locklear threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Odom. Ashton Emory sealed the 35-17 victory with a 34-yard touchdown run.
“I’m so proud of them after shaking back from four frustrating losses in a row,” UTEP head coach Scotty Walden said after the game. This team is getting better. There is not a 2-5 team that practices the way we practice.”
UTEP put up 411 yards of total offense.
Locklear completed 21 of 26 passes for 236 yards and the touchdown with an interception. He also carried the ball 13 times for 48 yards and the two scores.
“It’s nice to get something nice going and I loved how we ended the game,” Locklear said.
Emory had 15 carries for 96 yards and the touchdown.
Micah Davey tied a season high 14 tackles.
For Sam Houston, Hunter Watson completed 13 of 19 passes for 161 yards and touchdown. Watson exited the game due to injury in the second quater.
Mattauer was 4/8 for 38 yards and the touchown.
Landan Brown rushed for 110 yards off of 13 carries.
UTEP now has a bye week before a road trip to face Kennesaw State on Oct 28.
