More than 500 flights were canceled or delayed between DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field Monday, as rain and lightning hit North Texas.
Just after 8 a.m., 298 flights had been delayed and another 86 canceled at DFW Airport, the central hub of Fort Worth-based American Airlines, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. At Dallas Love Field, the headquarters of Southwest Airlines, 69 flights had been canceled and 49 delayed, according to FlightAware.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground delay at DFW Airport, meaning all flights bound for the airport are delayed from taking off at their departure airports. Both DFW and Love Field also were delaying departures by an average of 15 minutes, according to the FAA.
The delays and cancellations mark a bumpy start to the beginning of what will be a hectic Thanksgiving travel week in North Texas. DFW Airport is expecting about 3 million travelers during the Thanksgiving travel period, while Love Field is expecting over 320,000. The FAA expects this to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel season in 15 years, saying there were more than 48,000 flights scheduled on Monday.
