SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Two U.S Army command headquarters are leaving Military City USA by the end of the year.

According to a report from the San Antonio Express News, Army North and Army South, both based at Ft. Sam Houston, are about to merge into a new Western Hemisphere Command.

They will be headquartered at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.

The report says that consolidating the commands has been in the works for months, but it wasn’t until this week that Defense Department officials decided on the location for the combined Western Hemisphere Command.

It’s unclear at this point how much of an impact the move will have on the area’s economy.

According to the Express News, about 7% of the city’s labor force is employed by the military. That amounts to more than 86,000 people.

The move to North Carolina is expected to take place in the next 6 to 8 weeks.
